Christmas Commercials

Dec 19, 2016 Author Guy

he TV commercials for Christmas items stared mid-October and are now in high gear with Christmas Eve only a few days away. This year Christmas Eve is a Saturday night, with Christmas itself on Sunday. I am hoping that the weekend holiday will mean that more people will be able to see family and celebrate together without many people having to miss their regular work days.

Missing time from work for a holiday can be a burden for some people who only earn hourly wages and are desperate for enough hours each week to make a full paycheck. Having the holiday fall on the weekend also means that more people will be able to shop for last minute gifts without having to take time off from work.

Some of the Christmas commercials are for toys for the kids. Those usually air on the kids’ cable channels like Disney and the Cartoon Network. The daytime major networks are running a lot of clothing and household goods for the women. To be honest, I have not seen many commercials targeted toward men, although they might have some running on the SpikeTV network. I don’t usually watch that cable channel so I don’t know for sure.

The TV commercials that really slay me are all the ones for automobiles. It seems to me that only a small percentage of wealthy Americans can ever consider buying a car as a gift for the spouse. Most family budgets top out at a couple hundred dollars for the spouse, not $50 Grand. And, in my own opinion, I think a car would be a cheesy gift. You should buy a car when you need or want one – not as a Christmas gift. The same philosophy for engagement rings. I think guys who use Christmas as an excuse to buy her a diamond ring are lame. They should propose on a separate occasion and buy a thoughtful gift for Christmas. Sure, buy her jewelry if you want, but an engagement ring should be gifted for its own sake.

Let’s Vote on Commercials

Wouldn’t it be cool if we could have a way to vote on commercials? I would like to give kudos to the funny commercials and the clever ones. And a big thumbs down on some of the really annoying ones. In fact, if a commercial gets too many thumbs downs, the advertiser should be required to remove them.

Some of the Progressive Insurance commercials are cute, if you can stand looking at that ditzy girl, Flo. But there is one commercial that came out recently with the announcer from WWF screaming into a microphone and that shit gets on my last nerve.

Rewatching Mission Impossible III

Most action movies require something big and bag happening in the first 5 minutes of the movie. Mission Impossible III starts off with a boring adult party. I remember watching this movie when it first came out, and I liked it OK. Not a Tom cruise fan, particularly, but the movies were good with serious plots, some twists and turns, and lots of special effects.

For some reason, this movie takes a long time to “get busy.” Twelve minutes to set the stage and get to the guns and urgent background music. Still, it plays out well and it’s a good movie for a rainy day with nothing else to do because football for my teams is over.

My TV Show Critique

Oct 10, 2012 Author Guy

Just watched “Nashville,” the new TV show, and I thought it was pretty good. I appreciate that the producers took great pains to do real location shots, like the real backstage of the Grand Old Opry and the real courthouse. Thank God people will know what it looks like here instead of Hollywood filming everything in L.A. and trying to bullshit people into thinking California scenery is what all of the country looks like. California has a very distinctive look to the trees and shrubs and even the houses – it looks nothing like California around here – trust me on this.

The storyline was believable but not anything close to real life for most of the music business people that I know. The music was good but I would not expect anything less from T Bone Burnett. This show could be the next “Dallas” – that wouldn’t be so bad.

Nascar

Hell fuck yea! Greg Biffle won the race on Sunday and it was an amazing race. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the TV for most of it, even though I was at a BBQ at my friends house. We pulled his big screen TV out onto the patio to watch the race and enjoy the awesome weather at the same time. It was a really great day. The food was great, and the race was non stop action. The fight to the finish was a really close one. Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson fought for the finish in a race that came so very close to a tie.

Ties in racing are next to unheard of what with slow motion cameras to pick up the cars as they cross the finish line, but this one was close. We had to wait for the officials to let us know just who actually won the race. It was really exciting. After the race was over we sat around bullshitting for a while before we all left. I really enjoyed my Sunday off this week. I think the next race I might invite the guys over here to watch it. We shall see.
