Christmas Commercials

Dec 19, 2016 Author Guy

he TV commercials for Christmas items stared mid-October and are now in high gear with Christmas Eve only a few days away. This year Christmas Eve is a Saturday night, with Christmas itself on Sunday. I am hoping that the weekend holiday will mean that more people will be able to see family and celebrate together without many people having to miss their regular work days.

Missing time from work for a holiday can be a burden for some people who only earn hourly wages and are desperate for enough hours each week to make a full paycheck. Having the holiday fall on the weekend also means that more people will be able to shop for last minute gifts without having to take time off from work.

Some of the Christmas commercials are for toys for the kids. Those usually air on the kids’ cable channels like Disney and the Cartoon Network. The daytime major networks are running a lot of clothing and household goods for the women. To be honest, I have not seen many commercials targeted toward men, although they might have some running on the SpikeTV network. I don’t usually watch that cable channel so I don’t know for sure.

The TV commercials that really slay me are all the ones for automobiles. It seems to me that only a small percentage of wealthy Americans can ever consider buying a car as a gift for the spouse. Most family budgets top out at a couple hundred dollars for the spouse, not $50 Grand. And, in my own opinion, I think a car would be a cheesy gift. You should buy a car when you need or want one – not as a Christmas gift. The same philosophy for engagement rings. I think guys who use Christmas as an excuse to buy her a diamond ring are lame. They should propose on a separate occasion and buy a thoughtful gift for Christmas. Sure, buy her jewelry if you want, but an engagement ring should be gifted for its own sake.

Lego Store Letdown

Every little boy Iknow loves to play with Legos and I have to admit that I still have a big plastic box of my own Legos from childhood tucked away in the garage. Some day I want to drag them out and spend a day building stuff with a kid who likes to play with Legos. I guess it will be up to my sister to start birthing boys so I can have a kid to play with . LOL

When I was a kid, my Legos were always tied into a gift of some sort. I got Legos for birthdays, for Christmas, and sometimes for getting good grades or doing something that my parents like. I don’t remember ever going to the store and picking out a box of Legos for myself. So, when I was at the mall the other day and saw a brand new Legos store had opened, I made sure to go inside and check it out.

Well, I don’t know what exactly I was expecting from a Legos store, but that was not it. The store had floor to ceiling shelves of Lego sets, but they were the same dozen or so sets. I was hoping to find 100 or more different sets. But that did not happen. I was also hoping to be able to buy any individual piece in the color that I wanted, and some mini-figures, too. But, no. They have a small floor display with bins of loose Legos, but they are only a few standard bricks. Nothing special.

Have to say, I left there disappointed. It was a Lego Store Letdown of huge proportions. I expected a massive inventory of Lego dreamland, and only saw a small store with limited, new stuff they were pushing on this next generation.

Gearing Up for the Big Game

Only have a couple more hours to gear up for the Super Bowl party tonight. I am bringing a big platter of BBQ ribs as my part of the pot luck. I’ve been invited to a party at Kurt’s house, down in Brentwood. I’ve never been to his house before, but I know it is big and well furnished as he has been an executive for over 20 years and Brentwood is all high end homes.

Kurt’s wife was nice enough to ask what kind of beer each of us like to drink and she has planned a big spread of super bowl munchies and a buffet dinner for half time. To be honest, this is the first time I’ve been to a Super Bowl party that i didn’t have to BYOB.

Looking forward to watching the game on Kurt’s huge HDTV flat screen and hanging with his home boys. I know most of the guys that will be there, haven’t met many of their wives or girlfriends yet, and it’s kinda cool to be considered part of this group worthy of an invitation.

Awesome

Like most men, I cannot live without my football. This season was fucking awesome and the Superbowl is going to rock ! New England Patriots vs the New York Giants. I love both of these teams. They have great coaches and amazing players who are going to battle it out on the field to see who is best this year. I cannot decide who I should root for. The Pats have a really good chance against the Giants, but I honestly think the Giants will take it. I think I may just lay some bets on that with a seven point spread.

Now I only need to decide what to do for the game. Do I go somewhere else or host a Superbowl party here at home? I think since I hosted last year that I will go elsewhere this year. I want to enjoy the game without having to worry about refreshments for guests. I know that my friends Jessie and his wife Lisa are hosting a party, so perhaps I will go there. Lisa is a great cook and always goes all out for parties. She sure makes Jessie proud when she does too. He always brags about her cooking to everyone.

Not a White Christmas Here

Dec 25, 2011 Author Guy

Last year we did have a white Christmas. It snowed for several days before Christmas and it snowed on Christmas Day, too. Not this year! The temperatures have not been below 35 degrees this winter.

We started the day out slow and easy, then we had to go to my mom’s house for dinner. She is a great cook and takes this Christmas dinner thing very seriously. So we all have to get dressed up nice, can’t be late, and have to make an extra effort to not get into an argument with anyone in the family so we don’t upset my mom and ruin her Christmas.
